German‌ ‌Speaking‌ ‌Lesson 2

In this lesson, we will get to know basic sentences to greet other people, introduce about ourselves and how we should address each other in different situations. Now, follow this article to learn it!

Greeting and self introduction

Firstly, we will learn to greet others and introduce ourselves. The sentences that are used to talk to other people are used like this:

German

Meaning

Hallo

Hello

Mein Name ist …….

My name is …….

Ich spreche Deutsch

I speak German

“To be” verb: sein

In German, there are also conjugations for the verb “sein”, which means “to be”. Let’s see this table to know!

German

Meaning

Ich bin

I am

Du bist

you are

Sie sind

you are

Er ist

he is

Sie ist

she is

Es ist

it is

Ihr seid

all of you are

Sie sind

all of you are

Wir sind

we are

Sie sind

they are

In the above table, you can see that there are two ways to say “you are” and “all of you are”. The difference lies in two separate ways of addressing other people: formal and informal style. In the last part of this lesson, we will get to know this point more clearly.

Here are some examples with the verb “sein”:

German

Meaning

Er ist klein und faul.

He is short and lazy.

Sie ist schlank und dumm.

She is skinny and dumb.

Es ist alt und schmutzig.

It is old and dirty.

In the above table, you can see that there are two ways to say “you are” and “all of you are”. The difference lies in two separate ways of addressing other people: formal and informal style. In the next part of this lesson, we will get to know this point more clearly.

Addressing other people in formal and informal situations

In German communication, you may offend your partner if you do not address them in a correct way. Changing the way you address others can help you show respect and avoid confusing situations. Here are some examples of formal and informal address style:

Formal

Informal

Meaning

Sie

du

you

Sie

ihr

all of you

Above are the explanations of basic structures to communicate in German language. We hope this lesson can help you make progress in studying. Thank you!
